Undergraduate biomedical engineering (BME) students at North Carolina State University (NC State) are introduced to the medical innovation life cycle through their design sequence courses, which span across their junior and senior years. In each of the junior and senior design courses, students form teams and spend up to two semesters investigating health-related problems and developing working prototypes on a topic of their choice. Through these courses, students are introduced to the Stanford Biodesign Innovation Process, an iterative three-stage process in which medical innovators identify an unmet health need, explore possible solutions, and then implement prototypes [26]. Successfully completing each of these stages requires discovering and synthesizing an array of primary and secondary information sources.
